(prologue)

Bella slips into the school by a side door; she just saw a thing and she thinks she's seen it in a book before and thinks it's supposed to be mostly harmless but before she wakes Giles up over probably nothing or kills a likely neutral demon she wants to check.

And she pushes into the library.

"You... seemed to like her, and, and trust her. I'm - I haven't been taking notes, you understand."

"Yeah, but I haven't even been taking memories, so."

[jellyinthemix]

"Yes... I'm sorry," he says helplessly. "I've never had occasion to analyze your interactions from the perspective of 'how would Bella's sister react if she found out Bella no longer remembered her existence?'."

[cross_and_bow]

"Yeah, that's fair."

[jellyinthemix]

"I really wish I could be more help."

[cross_and_bow]

Sigh. "Not your fault. Unless you've been making wishes around demons."

[jellyinthemix]

"I try to avoid that."

[cross_and_bow]

"Good habit."

[jellyinthemix]

"Yes."

[cross_and_bow]

"I guess I'll just. Sit her down when Charlie's not home. Tell her."

[jellyinthemix]

"That... seems like it might be best. I don't know. I don't have the answers here."

[cross_and_bow]

"Yeah, I'm just - in case I have been mindcontrolled, instead of it being everybody else, seems like it might be worth the extra sanity check."

[jellyinthemix]

He nods.

[cross_and_bow]

And she goes to talk to Soph.

[jellyinthemix]

And Giles continues futilely researching possible causes for an extraneous sibling or a comprehensive memory deletion.

[keyed_up]

Soph is in the library after school the next day, subdued.

[jellyinthemix]

Well, that's awkward.



"Are you all right?"

[keyed_up]

"Sorta? Uh, Bella says you can't, like, analyze me or anything, but I wanted to make sure?"

[jellyinthemix]

"I'm not even sure what I might try to analyze you for."

[keyed_up]

"Being a - something? Like, you can tell if somebody's a vampire, can you tell if I'm a human in particular out of the kinds of non-vampire?"

[jellyinthemix]

"I could try a few divinations and see what I turn up..."

[keyed_up]

"I mean I dunno if it's useful but it'd, I dunno."

[jellyinthemix]

"Would you like me to?"

[keyed_up]

"Yeah."

[jellyinthemix]

"All right then. Have a seat."

He spends some time fussing with Latin chanting and a quartz crystal and a bowl of water.



The water fills with a bright green glow. The quartz crystal glows in the exact same shade, brighter and brighter, and then shatters into dust.

"...I don't know how to interpret that," says Giles.
