odd little alucine

It's never previously occurred to Cayra to put a door across an alucine boundary, but now that she's encountered it in practice it makes sense. It makes it visually obvious and it lets you lock it if you want. This door wasn't locked, and it looked like it led to a public bathroom, not a bar, from the signage, so she's still confused. Still, it's a good idea. She twists open the glass vial pendant around her neck and bends her head to the little blue lily inside to make a note of it; as an afterthought she tries to send it off to her antheomancer-chatcircle, anything to have a decent conversation, but it doesn't go. Her flower doesn't look wilting, but she can put it back in the garden and get a fresher one for the vial later. At least her personal files look okay. She closes up the vial again, giving the flower a touch of antheomancy for its health, and finds a bathroom inside the bar that dominates this little alucine.

And then she emerges into the bar. It doesn't seem to be staffed. Or stocked. Why wasn't it locked?

If I were designing this like your magic had no constraints at all, I'd want a large room, its own walled alucine, and two or more portals on cloth - with pockets for dowels at each end so it can be hung neatly - each of which was password-protected both in who could pass through them and in who could interact with them. So if I place one, no one can touch it or move it around, even at the remove of tools or torching the entire building it's in or something, unless they have my password written on them somewhere. And then it matters much less how destructible it is."

Flynn slowly nods, "I can aim for that. Something that big is more likely to mess with me, so I'll want to do it in steps and you can test to make sure I'm still rational."

"My point about making plans for what's next after you've managed this stands, though, especially if you won't have much sociability left when you're done with the portals. So - what else?"

"I'm not just doing this to make you happy, I'm trying to figure out how weaving works. If this ends up working well, then I can make you something else, but if it doesn't I'll want to figure out why. I don't want to use all of my rationality up without gaining something for me and the people at home."

"That makes sense," concedes Cayra. "Uh, one sec." She unvials her flower and does something with it, then puts it away again. "Sorry about that. Okay. So I probably need to tell you the password?"

"You probably shouldn't in case I lose too much."

[affodell]

"How can you make it depend on a password you don't know?"

[erinflight]

"The password Cayra has written on her hand at the moment."

[affodell]

"Okay. But not my hand. I'm putting inside my cheek."

[erinflight]

"How are you going to do that? Oh wait, your magic?"

[affodell]

"Yep."

[erinflight]

"Ready to start?"

[affodell]

"Bar, if you could produce a piece of fabric as described? No need to make this one indestructible."

Bar produces a roll of fabric, a wooden rod inserted into sewn-over ends on each short side, a string suitable for hanging from a nail pinned to one of these.

"Thank you."

Flynn leaps up from her chair and practically runs outside.

"Why do we need to be outside?" asks Cayra, following her with the bowl of candy and the roll of fabric.

[erinflight]

"In case it doesn't work. I don't think the bar would be very happy with me if I made a permanent hole in the center of the room."

[affodell]

"That makes sense. I'll stand well back, shall I?" Cayra hands over the fabric and gives Flynn plenty of room.

"I'll start with one portal," Flynn says,spreading a piece of cloth flat on the grass.

She takes a deep breathe and begins to weave.
Slowly the threads become visible in the air around her. They are cobweb thin and vibrant, shifting colors faster than the colors can be identified.

Flynn kneels in front of the cloth and reaches out to pull a thread from the air, it settles into silver and with a twist of her wrist, disappears into the fabric. She picks out another and another, and gradually the cloth begins to change, deepening.

A red thread darts over to Cayra and weaves around her face, before sliding into the cloth.

A minute passes and then two. Flynn begins to weave faster, almost frantically. The cloth rises into the air and stiffens. A doorknob appears on its left side. The threads vanish, and Flynn collapses backwards onto the grass, panting.

Cayra approaches, tentatively.

Flynn glances towards Cayra and then back towards the portal, "That was intense. Can you open it?"

[affodell]

"Maybe. I wasn't imagining a doorknob, did that happen by itself or on purpose?" Cayra asks, picking up the portal by its string and finding a branch in the woodsy area to hang it from.

[erinflight]

"By itself," Flynn says, rising and following her.

[affodell]

Cayra turns the knob and pulls.

[erinflight]

The portal swings open revealing a vast, featureless expanse that extends endlessly in every direction. The floor is white and slightly reflective, illuminated by a warm, sourceless light. There is no visible ceiling.

"This isn't exactly what I expected," Flynn says, stepping inside.

"It's huge," says Cayra. "And it's got alucine-type daylight."
